The Nikon D3100 Digital SLR Camera provides an easy-to-use and affordable entrance to the world of DSLRs. The 14.2-megapixel D3100 has powerful features, such as the enhanced Guide Mode that makes it easy to unleash creative potential and capture memories with still images and full HD video. Other great features include an 11-point autofocus system, 3-inch LCD monitor with Live View shooting, HDMI output, 6 Scene Modes, automatic sensor cleaner, and much more.
14.2-megapixel DX-format CMOS image sensor
Nikon's 14.2 megapixel DX-format CMOS imaging sensor coupled with Nikon's industry-leading advanced EXPEED 2 image processing technologies provides color-independent pre-conditioning prior to A/D conversion and works in harmony with high-precision digital image processing algorithms to produce natural-looking images that benefit from faithful color and tone reproduction along with a wide dynamic range.
3.0-inch Color LCD monitor Bright and sharp, the D3100's 3.0-in., approximately 230k-dot TFT LCD monitor ensures comfortable viewing when playing back photos. It also makes reading menus easier thanks to text size that is now 20% larger than that of the D40 and D60. In addition, the spacious monitor is convenient for retouching, allowing you to modify pictures without the need for a computer.
Picture Control System expands creativity
Customize the appearance of photos before you shoot with Nikon's Picture Control System. Six settings — Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait, and Landscape— let you change the look of photos depending on mood or subject. Each setting can be adjusted to provide additional control over sharpness, contrast, and other effects.
Nikon Integrated Dust Reduction System
The D3100 is equipped with Nikon's Integrated Dust Reduction System. This solution includes a special Airflow Control System that redirects dust away from the low-pass filter located in front of the image sensor, thereby limiting its accumulation. Additionally, when powering the camera on or off, the filter automatically vibrates at precise frequencies to release image-degrading dust that may adhere to it.
Shooting in bright sunlight often produces pictures with extreme contrast between light and dark areas, resulting in loss of tone and detail. Active D-Lighting effectively combats this by preserving important details in shadows and highlights. The results are optimally exposed photos that better reflect the scene as you saw it.
Low noise ISO sensitivity from 100 to 3200, Expandable to ISO 12800
The D3100's normal ISO range extends from ISO 100 to 3200, allowing for superior shooting in low-light conditions. Additionally, the D3100's ISO range can be expanded to a Lo 1 setting of ISO 100 or a Hi 1 setting of ISO 6400, furthering the opportunities for previously impossible shots.
Durable 100,000-cycle shutter unit
Reliable performance is a given with the D3100 thanks to its long-lasting shutter unit. Tested to 100,000 cycles on actual working models of the D3100, this precision mechanism delivers shutter speeds from 30 seconds to 1/4000 second and flash synch up to 1/200 second. And you'll never miss a shooting opportunity thanks to the rapid shutter response that eliminates annoying shutter-release delay.
11-point Autofocus System with 3D Focus Tracking
The D3100's 11-point auto focus system utilizes Nikon's exclusive Scene Recognition System with Face Detection to help create the best possible images in a variety of shooting environments. Nikon's 11-point AF offers best-in-class speed and accuracy, helping to ensure sharp focus, shot-after-shot. Single-point AF is suggested for static subjects, Dynamic-area AF for moving subjects, Auto-area AF for spontaneous shooting and 3D-tracking with 11 AF points for maintaining accurate focus on a subject moving throughout the frame.
In-camera Retouch image editing
The D3100 incorporates a comprehensive set of in-camera editing features to make the most of captured images without the need of a computer. The D3100 also introduces several new Retouch features, including a Soft Filter effect, which applies a smooth appearance to faces or the entire image; Perspective Control, which helps correct distortions in perspective often encountered in photographs of architecture; and Color Outline, which creates monochrome outlines of objects in images by eliminating color and tonal gradations. The D3100 saves each of these edited images as a separate JPEG file, ensuring the original image is left unmodified.
Pop-up flash helps optimize exposure
When the light gets low or you find yourself shooting in tricky backlit lighting, use the built-in pop-up flash to brighten the scene. It activates automatically when needed depending on exposure mode, or can be enabled manually. In addition, support for i-TTL flash control increases exposure accuracy.
Timers & remote control
Whether you want to fire off a series of shots in rapid succession or use an optional remote control, Guide mode shows you how. No more digging through manuals or searching through menus to find the function you want to use. Thanks to Guide mode, you can start enjoying the D3100 from the moment you open the box.
Continuous shooting as fast as 3 frames per second
Combined with fast power-up and split-second shutter response, decisive moments are captured easily without annoying shooting lag.
Scene Auto Selector
D3100 automatically selects the Scene Mode that matches the shooting situation and subject. During Live View shooting with the Mode dial on Auto or Auto (flash off), Scene Auto Selector automatically activates Portrait, Landscape, Close up or Night portrait modes depending on the scene. For added convenience, an icon appears in the top-left corner of the LCD monitor that shows the selected mode.
Eye-Fi Support - Transfer Photos and Movies Wirelessly Support for optional Eye-Fi SD cards lets you transfer photos and movies from the camera to a PC via wireless LAN. This eliminates the need for removing the memory card or USB connections to transfer data. The camera can be used to turn Eye-Fi cards on and off, but may not support other Eye-Fi functions. As of June 2010, the following cards can be used: 2GB SD Eye-Fi cards in the Share, Home, and Explore product categories, 4GB SDHC Eye-Fi cards in the Anniversary, Share Video, Explore Video, and Connect x2 product categories, and 8GB SDHC cards in the Pro x2 and Explore x2 product categories. Eye-Fi cards are for use only in the country of purchase. Be sure the Eye-Fi card firmware has been updated to the latest version.
